What is EBCRC?
EYE BANK COORDINATION AND RESEARCH CENTRE
In a World of darkness, the ability of seeing a loved one can be more than a million dreams. For those who are unable to see the light, the gift of vision is the most precious boon, a gift that can illuminate their world and introduce them to the joys that we take for granted.
Eye Bank Coordination and Research Centre was established in March 1995, with a commitment to give sight to the “corneally blind” and commitment to bring International Eye Banking Standards to India. We were fortunate to have full encouragement and support from International Federation of Eye Banks (IFEB), Baltimore, USA that made it possible to change the face of eye banking in India.
With adherence to detailed scientific procedures & standards laid down by the IFEB for Eye Banks worldwide, by Eye Bank Association of India (EBAI) EBCRC today stands a class apart not only in terms of eye banking protocols but also in terms of automation, public relations, awareness campaigns and strategic planning for the 21st Century. We are considered a ‘Model Community Eye Bank’ in Asia Pacific with as many as 22 Eye Donation Centers having joined in partnership with us. The list of these centers who form a part of our network speaks for itself.
The primary objective of the Centre is to process, evaluate, store and distribute the eyes received from various Eye Donation Centres in the city of Mumbai including the suburbs. The Eye Bank spread over an area of 1000 sq.ft. with all the equipments and facilities including specular microscope, deep freezer (-80 degree used for AMG storage) and also Pre-Cut Machine for DALK and DSEAK Corneas required for a full-fledged eye bank with a staff of 14 including 4 Technicians.Since 1995 till March 2017 centre has provided more than 9600 corneas to the patients.
The Centre also provides pre-cut tissues for lamellar keratoplasty as per specifications prescribed by corneal surgeons. From September, 2015 till March 2017 EBCRC has provided more than 75 nos. of Precut DSAEK tissue to various surgeon in Mumbai.
We also provide Amniotic Membrane Graft (AMG) which is widely used in a number of indications, either as a ‘substitute’ to replace the damaged ocular tissue or as a ‘patch’ (biological dressing), or combination of both. It is useful in corneal diseases and also conjunctival diseases besides its application in Leaking Blebs, Scleral Melt, Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency, Fornix Reconstructions & Socket Reconstruction. Till March 2017 we have provided more than 1790 nos of AMGs.
As a matter of policy, corneas are provided on priority basis to bilaterally corneally blind patients and children below 7 years of age. It is a model of community eye bank in India. The corneas are provided to the patients irrespective of caste, creed or religion who have registered in Municipal, Government and Private hospitals for transplant as per the waiting list. Majority of the patients belong to economically weaker sections of the society who get operated in Municipal or Government Hospitals. They are provided corneas at a highly subsidized rate.
The Centre is a member of International Federation of Eye and Tissue Banks (IFEB) and maintains the quality standards prescribed by them. The centre is also a member of Eye Bank Association of India. The centre has also received active support from the Federation.
