The motivational efforts for eye donation could produce very effective results if carried out on a sustained basis in large hospitals.
There is a tremendous scope for Hospital Cornea Retrieval program (HCRP) especially if initiated properly in large municipal or government hospitals.
The data collected from the hospitals which have initiated hospital retrieval programme indicates encouraging results. If taken up properly, it is possible to reach a retrieval figure of 20 to 25% of total deaths taking place in the hospital through proper motivational efforts within a period of 3 to 5 years.
For implementation of HCRP we have entered into MOU with various hospitals viz. KEM, Nair, Fortis, Nanavati, Global, Breech Candy, Jaslok, P. D. Hinduja, Bombay Hospital etc. In the last year as a result of counselling and motivating the relatives of deceased in several hospitals we were able to receive 100 nos. of corneas.
We have been sincerely trying to increase eye donation by initiating Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP) in biggest hospitals in Mumbai. We have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for permitting our counselors to visit hospitals for counseling and motivating the relatives of deceased persons for eye donations. K. E. M., B. Y. L. Nair, Cooper, Bombay, PDNH Hinduja, Jaslok, Rajawadi, L. H. Hiranandani, Saifee Hospital etc are few names of our partner hospitals.
HCRP is very advantages due to availability of medical history, availability of tissues from younger individuals, reduction in the time interval between death and corneal excision and cost effectiveness.
There are grief counselors in some of the hospitals who motivate the family members of the deceased for eye donation. They get to know of potential eye donors within the Hospital. In last three years i.e. 2013-15 we have received 656 tissues through HCRP.
